The Gilbert Clinical Team

Dr Janine Blackman MD PhD

Biography

Dr Janine BlackmanAs past Medical Director of Integrative Medicine at University of Maryland and now as co-founder of The Gilbert Clinic, Professor Janine Blackman is fundamentally reshaping the integrative medicine model of healthcare. The Gilbert Clinic is a center for excellence regarding optimal care for people with chronic conditions and for people desiring to improve their lives.

Dr. Blackman began her professional life not as a physician but as a chemical engineer. Having graduated from Penn State in 1982 with a B.S. and then in 1985 from the University of Delaware with a Masters Degree in this subject (interning in the process with a much coveted Du Pont de Nemours placement), she went to work for the Baltimore Aircoil Company in their research division. Within two years she became a manager, a rare achievement in this traditionally male-dominated field. Although happy in her work and with her rapid rise through the ranks of engineering, she had always harbored a great interest in medicine. As with many who have a calling, this desire grew with the years and in 1989 she acted upon it. Enrolling in the highly respected University of Maryland Medical System, she earned a place in the combined MD-PhD program.

Exceptional medicine demands exceptional caring. Nowhere is that more important than in the doctor-patient relationship. It is for this reason that Dr. Blackman chose to specialize in family medicine. Although it’s not glamorous, it is here on a daily basis that the physician can make an immediate difference. Graduating with a MD and PhD in Epidemiology and a concurrent Masters Degree in Statistics, she entered her clinical residency training in Family Medicine in 1999.

It was during her residency that she came to recognize the limitations of the current medical model to help with many of the conditions of her patients.

After completion of her family medicine residency training, Dr Blackman was awarded placement in the inaugural fellowship training program in Integrative Medicine at University of Maryland’s Center for Integrative Medicine, the oldest and largest center of its kind in the nation, and one which is supported by the National Institutes of Health.

The fellowship training in Integrative Medicine was an opportunity to apply her rigorous scientific, engineering mind to the varied kaleidoscope of alternative therapies offered in the USA. So impressed were her teachers with Dr. Blackman’s work that on completion of this program in 2003 she was offered, and accepted, the office of Medical Director, University of Maryland Integrative Medicine, LLC and an Assistant Professorship in the Department of Family Medicine.

Professor Blackman’s meteoric rise belies a genuine, heartfelt approach to patient care. It is with this sense in mind that after three fulfilling years as Medical Director she has returned to the clinic room. While remaining a Clinical professor, and still giving lectures to many of the major medical conferences and institutions throughout the country, she has co-founded The Gilbert Clinic, a private healthcare facility located in the Greater Washington D.C. area that is dedicated to resolving conditions that conventional medical approaches alone do not.

Offering uniquely effective treatment available nowhere else in the nation, The Gilbert Clinic combination of conventional Western Medicine, Naturopathic approaches, Chinese Medicine and Psychotherapy is bringing hope to sufferers of fibromyalgia and a range of other conditions thought to be hopeless. As Medical Director of The Gilbert Clinic, Dr. Blackman is focused, along with her colleagues Jonathan Gilbert NCCAOM, and Anita Bains, APRN, BC, on the recovery of her patients, not just the management of their symptoms.

In this way, Professor Janine Blackman, M.D., PhD has nothing less in mind than re-shaping the model of medical practice in the United States. With her history of success so far, she just might do it.
