Anita Bains APRN, B

Biography

Anita BainsAnita Bains is a licensed Psychotherapist who brings over 40 years of clinical experience to her busy practice. Her experience spans both management and teaching appointments at some of the foremost medical institutions in the world. This culminated, among other awards, in her Presidency of the Psychiatric Advanced Practice Nurses of Maryland.

Her journey began at The Reading Hospital School of Nursing in Reading, Pennsylvania where she graduated in September, 1961. Her talents were quickly spotted and put into practice, as by 1963 she had become a manager in the busy and highly regarded Mercy Hospital in Urbana, Illinois. This was to become a familiar pattern in the next 25 years of Anita’s nursing career. To further this career, she was to return to the academic world to achieve a BS in Nursing 1978 and an MS in Nursing in 1988 from the Universities of Victoria, Victoria, British Columbia and Maryland, USA respectively (during which she received mention in the 1988 Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges as well as the Award for Excellence in Psychiatric Nursing; University of Maryland School of Nursing Graduate Program). These further qualifications enabled her to scale the ranks of the nursing world to reach a consultant status; establishing and managing major implementations in large hospitals in both the United States and Canada.

During the late 1980s, Anita’s interest and subsequent focus turned to the world of Psychotherapy and research. From 1990 until the present Anita has been in private practice. Psychotherapy became and remains her enduring passion. She has trained in both the conventional as well as some of the less traditional models of this field to develop a profound, practical knowledge and ability in the subject. From 1994-1997 she was the recipient of an Internship for Psychiatric Nursing Faculty teaching at The National Institute of Health sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She has also been an Assistant Professor at the Union Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Baltimore, Maryland from 1991-1996. She was also invited and became a Clinical Instructor at the world renowned Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing from 1996-2000.

In 2005 Anita Bains came together with two other leading practitioners in healthcare to create The Gilbert Clinic. The result of this collaboration is a unique new model of healthcare dedicated to the recovery of conditions deemed hopeless by conventional medicine. It is also her private clinical residence.

Anita’s career in nursing and in psychotherapeutic practice has been notable for its deep sense of caring and pursuit of excellence, an approach which she brings in full measure to the patients of The Gilbert Clinic.
